Romance scams involving the transfer of cryptocurrency are becoming more commonplace each year. Unfortunate as the reality may be, there are steps crypto businesses should take to fight scammers. In an online romance scam, the scammer contacts the targeted victim through a dating app or on a social media platform like Facebook. Either way, the scammer now has a fake identity that can be used to contact unsuspecting people.

Next, the scammer finds a target or many targets and sends a message to start a conversation. Quickly, the scammer showers the victim with compliments and the relationship becomes more serious. Once the victim is emotionally connected, the scammer asks for money to cover some type of immediate or emergency expense. Saying the scammer is in the military and stationed in a different country is a common excuse. When the timing is right, the scammer will ask the victim for money.

It could be for emergency surgery or to finally schedule a visit to meet in person. Some scammers can get very creative and tailor the request to the victim. The emotionally involved target is usually more than happy to provide their romantic interest with the money they need. As a way to make new friends before moving to California, Hutchinson began to use the online dating website "Hinge. She told CBS News' Consumer Investigative Correspondent Anna Werner that she felt a strong connection with him when he told her he came from the same town in China from where Hutchinson was adopted.

So I was very skeptical," she said. Hutchinson said that Hao reassured her that this was an area he knew well. Hutchinson said Hao told her to create an account on a legitimate site, Crypto. Then she said he sent her a link and told her to transfer money to the new link, to what he said was a cryptocurrency exchange platform.

She started small but said she soon started investing larger amounts. When her account began showing profits, she suggested to her father that he invest too and so he did. She discovered that the cryptocurrency investments weren't real. All her and her father's funds had gone into the scammer's pockets. It's okay.

Lonely people enter these sites looking for love, but instead, they get scammed. Cryptocurrency scams are taking over dating apps to fool unsuspecting users. Falling in love through the internet is now taking on a whole new dimension due to lonely hearts searching for a soulmate becoming the main targets of crypto scammers. In what appears to be the latest series of crypto scams.

Scammers would target unsuspecting users of online dating apps as their victims. The Bitcoin fraud scheme is acquiring popularity in Japan, where several local media have reported scams of this type in recent months. Claiming to be a successful overseas cryptocurrency trader, the scammer had convinced the victim to put an investment in a fraudulent cryptocurrency platform on the promise of making hefty profits. Japan covered the sad news. Another local media had already reported that another year-old woman fell for a very similar scam.

The matter has escalated to become a potential national risk, as some agencies in Japan have started to give warning advice to users. The men claimed they were international experts in digital assets. A publication of Yahoo! Japan at the beginning of the year highlighted the phenomenon is spreading throughout the entire nation. The report highlighted the particular case of a year-old man who got scammed by a year-old Taiwanese girl with whom he had plans to marry and who would have stolen more than USD 70, from him.

Single people looking for romance in China have also faced similar situations. In April, Hangzhou highlighted the case of a Chinese woman who had been cheated on by her two online boyfriends simultaneously.

The resident of Zhejiang province explained that one of the subjects invited her to join a gambling union. The alleged trading platform also kept his money.
